Amuneke, MFR, helped Nigeria’s U23 team win gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. In 1994, his two goals secured the Super Eagles’ Africa Cup of Nations triumph over Zambia and earned him African Footballer of the Year honours. His career includes a move from Egypt’s Zamalek to FC Barcelona. He also serves on FIFA’s Technical Study Group.

In 2024, Uzodimma brought Amuneke from Spain to restructure Heartland FC as Technical Manager. Despite his efforts, the club was relegated in the 2024–25 season. Now, Uzodimma has further recognised him with this ambassadorial role to boost sports in Imo.
Speaking in the Assembly chamber, the governor praised Amuneke’s contribution to what he calls the "Imo Dream Team". He said, "In the area of sports, we have gone beyond ceremonies and trophies to deploy sports as a vehicle for youth engagement, unity, and job creation." Citing recent successes, he noted that Imo athletes have won 85 medals 38 gold, 21 silver and 26 bronze at national and regional events.
He added, "To further institutionalise this momentum, we appointed Olympic gold medallist Emmanuel Amuneke as Grand Ambassador for Sports Development." Uzodimma also pledged investment in infrastructure, coaching programmes, and grassroots scouting to support youth development.
This appointment marks another step in the governor’s vision for a stronger, better‑resourced sporting culture in Imo State.

We applaud this strategic move. By elevating Emmanuel Amuneke to Grand Ambassador for Sports Development, we celebrate both his impressive achievements and the state’s aspirations. We note that Amuneke is not just a decorated athlete Olympic gold in 1996, AFCON heroics in 1994, African Footballer of the Year, and a Barcelona alumnus but a leader who understands the transformative power of sport.
We believe appointing him reflects a deeper intent: to use athletics as a catalyst for youth engagement, community cohesion, and economic opportunity. The governor’s emphasis on medals and grassroots infrastructure confirms a bold shift from mere fanfare to sustained impact. It’s encouraging to see the integration of coaching programmes and talent scouting into public policy.

We note that Heartland FC’s relegation revealed challenges in Imo’s sports framework. Yet, this setback highlights the need for visionary leadership at both grassroots and elite levels. Amuneke’s dual role as Heartland’s Technical Manager and now as ambassador ensures continuity and focus across the sporting landscape.
We argue that sports development in Imo holds promise beyond the pitch it can reshape education, health, and job creation. By entrusting this mission to someone of Amuneke’s calibre, we honour the belief that sport is more than competition it’s empowerment. We return to our opening sentiment: this appointment signals not just recognition but renewal for Imo’s sporting future.
